I lost my Grandfather at the beginning of the year, sometime in February. At the same time, my friend’s Grandfather passed away. A few weeks later another close friend of mine lost her grandmother. To add on to the list, my Granduncle, a pastor’s wife and another friend’s father breathed their last breath; all of this happened even before the year 2006 ended. Never before in my life have I been to so many funerals in a single year.
At times like these, you can’t help but ponder upon the life of the departed and the memories that was left behind. You listen to stories, testimonies of their lives. You hear how they lived, how they treated the people around, how their lives inspired others to go the extra mile.
It makes you wonder what will people say about you on your own funeral. In fact, it makes you imagine the set up of your own funeral. Who will be there? How many will testify that you have impacted their lives? The legacy that you lived…
I just graduated from university and am just starting my life. I remain unemployed by choice for I refuse to join everyone else in entering the rat race. For the past four months I’ve been doing my own self-study and worked on several ventures. After all has been said and done, you start to wonder why are you doing all of it? Why is everyone working so hard for the reason that they’re not sure of? Get a nice pay? Nice house?
I believe that there’s more to life than that for me. I believe that I can do much more than that. I can be the difference. More than getting a steady job, a family, a nice house then after 20-30 years, you retire.
It has always been my dream to start a business that will cause an impact in society. I believe businesses and corporations have the power to cause a change in the society that their in. That’s the legacy that I want to leave behind! I want to build a business that will not only make an impact for the society (for the better of course) but it will be a business that truly cares for people. I want to be able to spend more time with the people I care about. I want to impart wisdom and knowledge to those that comes after me. It is said it is more blessed to give than to receive. I truly believe that I am but a steward on this earth and nothing on this earth I really own. I’m setting my sights on a higher calling.
That’s how I want my life story to be like. What about you?
Samuel Yau, 2006
